Native Title Rights Recognised

A group of Aboriginal people have been recognised as rightful custodians of a large parcel of land far north of Queensland.

The Federal Court of Australia recognised the claim lodged by the Mandigalbay Yidinji people for over 3140 hectares of land situtated south-east of Cairns. The victory has been hailed as another win for native title rights in Australia.

The victory follows protacted negotiations between the Queensland government, the Cairns City Council, Telstra and Ergon Energy.

Native Title Tribunal Member and Mediator, Gaye Sculthorpe, described the win as one which would be "welcomed by everyone".

"It not only recognised the Mandigalbay Yidinji people's native title rights but also protected the rights of other interest groups, as well as the general public would continue to access the reserves", she said.
