ANZAC Day Australia

ANZAC Day Australia

Lest We Forget...

At a memorial service at Gallipoli, Governor-General Michael Jeffrey has called on all Australians to renounce violence and hatred and preach the message of tolerance and understanding.

Major-General Jeffrey made the remark during the Anzac memorial service held at Gallipoli.

"If we can all work harder to try to resolve our differences through peaceful means, through being more caring for one another...I think that would make for a much better world, said Major-General Jeffrey to Southern Cross Broadcasting.

The Governor-General along with Veteran Affairs Minister are Australia's offical representatives at yesterday's ceremony.

Major-General Jeffrey said that the only good that came out of war was the bonding and mateship that gave rise to the Anzac legend.

Major-General Jeffrey also said that war must never be glorified but those who fought for queen and country must be accorded appropriate recognition and honour so that their sacrifices are never forgotten in an otherwide futile and bloody conflict.

"Today, we commemorate outstanding courage and strength of character in the face of incredible and sustained adversity, said Major-General Jeffrey.

"May this wonderful memorial continue to inspire all who pass this way, that from the ugliness and futility of war can sometimes flow an enduring good.

"Let us never forget".
