You may consider renting cars, vans, four-wheel drive vehicles and campervans. Campervans will provide a combination of accommodation and transport, and you can stay at one of the vast number of caravan parks around the country. You will find that Australia has an excellent road and highway infrastructure, which will allow you to rent a wide range of vehicles from sports cars or four-wheel drive vehicles, to luxury campervans. You can rent cars at major airports, central city locations, suburbs and resorts in Australia and will find many companies offer competitive rates. In most cases, personal injury or damage to the vehicle or property by a third party is covered by compulsory insurance. If an accident occurs, an excess payment amount is often agreed. You may choose from several additional insurance options. The minimum age for renting a car is 21 years, but in some cases a fee may be charged for drivers under the age of 25. In Australia you must drive on the left-hand side of the road, with average speed limits of 60 km/h in cities and towns (sometimes 50km/h) and 100-110 km/h on country roads and highways. By law, you and your fellow-passengers must wear seat belts at all times. Motorcycle riders and cyclists must wear a helmet at all times. Please be aware that strict drink-driving laws apply and random breath testing is common practice. An international visitor may drive in Australia on a valid overseas driver's licence for the same class of vehicle. You must keep your license with you at all times together with an international driver's permit if the permit is not in English.
Petrol in Australia is available in super (lead replacement fuel), unleaded, premium unleaded and diesel grades and is sold by the litre. Petrol stations are easy to find and most of them accept international credit cards. Please ensure you carry a detailed map with you, especially when driving though the outback. Use ‘on-road’ routes only and check facilities and road conditions before you leave. Make sure you have adequate water with you (five litres per person per day), sufficient fuel and food. Many car rental companies offer a 24/7 emergency service for breakdowns and other problems. Please note, that we are able to make arrangements to cater for any special needs with regard to disabilities.
