1. Focus on industry relevant teaching – a university for the real world QUT’s balance of theory and practical experience in its leading-edge courses ensures that our graduates are in demand. According to the Graduate Careers Council of Australia’s 2004 survey QUT has the highest graduate employment rate of Queensland universities. Internationally recognised courses QUT strives to deliver professional courses whose quality is recognised internationally. In a 2005 report released by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA), QUT was commended for the rigour of the quality assurance of its courses and emphasis on real world training and research. Guaranteed pathways to university QUT offers academically focused English language and pathway programs through QUT International College located at the Kelvin Grove campus. QUT International College provides a range of support services to its students including a Welfare Adviser for personal counselling. Students in our university entry programs have access to Language and Learning Advisers to help improve language and academic skills. Lively community Our QUT community is busy all year round, with international students playing a major role in many festivals and events. QUT’s Gardens Point campus is the only city university campus with comprehensive facilities in the Brisbane central business district, situated right next to the beautiful city Botanic Gardens and the Brisbane River. The inner city location reinforces QUT’s links with business and industry while creating a dynamic environment for students. The Goodwill Bridge (for pedestrians and cyclists) links the Gardens Point Campus with the popular South Bank Parklands and cultural precinct. QUT’s Kelvin Grove Campus, housing the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, is just two kilometres from the city centre. All three QUT campuses are linked by a regular free student bus service.

Culturally diverse university QUT is one of Australia’s leading universities with nearly 40,000 students including 5000 international students from over 100 countries. QUT’s International Careers Counsellor, one of only two in Australian Universities, provides opportunities for international students to experience the work environment in their home country while they study. Positions are organised though Careers and Employment’s International Work Placement Scheme. Participants in the scheme have the advantage of re-establishing familiarity with work and recruitment practices in their home country. 14. World Class Virtual Services Enrolled students can also access, QUT Virtual, a state of the art student intranet providing online student support. • QUT offers Australia’s only degree in Aerospace Avionics. Graduates are involved in design, development, manufacture and maintenance work on aeroplanes, helicopters, spacecraft and satellites. • Graduates of Industrial Design courses have been recognised for excellence in the field winning five out of twenty awards at the prestigious 2005 Australian Design Awards. The Industrial Design programs are setting world benchmarks in design innovation and entrepreneurial design, resulting in more than 30 professional practices established in the last ten years. The program emphasis is on innovation, creative thinking, human-centred design research and usability, strategic design and design leadership. QUT Industrial Design is an Educational member of ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design). • The Faculty research program combining Building and Infrastructure Systems helps communities to live and work in buildings which are safe, environmentally friendly and cost effective • Medical Engineering research leaders develop and promote the innovative use of new and emerging technologies in order to improve the quality of life of future users. • The Energy and Resource Management program improves the quality of water in our households through research that focuses on urban hydrology and water-quality modelling. • Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technology (SAIVT) contributes to the security of people’s lives through research in speech enhancement for forensic applications and palm recognition. • The Colab program provides focus for research relating to creating better environments through our multidisciplinary design disciplines. The Faculty’s human-centred research helps to improve landscapes, buildings, colour and lighting. • QUT researchers, through the CRC for Satellite Systems, have helped launch Australia’s first satellite in more than 30 years. • A new generation of artificial hearts that could give cardiac patients ten or more extra years of life are being designed by medical engineering researchers at QUT. This long-term and extensive collaboration and partnership with industry provides students with unparalleled practical experience throughout their course. • Nursing students have the opportunity to undertake clinical placements overseas, in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Norway and the United States. • The School of Nursing has an established relationship with the National Taipei College of Nursing. Human Movement Studies • Students work in clinical, laboratory and teaching facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and ample teaching space. • Students can undertake practical placements overseas, using QUT’s strong links with sports and science institutes around the globe. Opportunities also exist for fourth year students to undertake a large practical project abroad. • Institutes with which past students have undertaken practicums have included the Hong Kong Sports Institute, Adidas Sports Medicine in Auckland, and the New Zealand Institute of Sport. • Students gain real world experience by undertaking practicums in a wide range of industry settings, including hospitals, clinics, government agencies and sporting institutes such as the Australian Institute of Sport. Public Health • The Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) is Queensland's first degree in paramedics. It provides graduates with the skills, knowledge and qualifications that give them a competitive edge in pursuing a career as an ambulance paramedic with agencies such as the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). • The only university in Queensland, and one of only four in Australia, that offers a bachelor qualification in Health Information Management. • The only undergraduate course in nutrition and dietetics in Queensland accredited for membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia. Optometry • QUT has the only optometry school in Queensland. It is one of only three in Australia. • By participating in the practices of working optometrists, ophthalmologists, and in other clinical settings, students gain hands-on, real-world experience throughout their course. Psychology & Counselling • Students benefit from an on-site psychology and counselling clinic which brings ongoing practical experience directly to the classroom. Staff are research active, and use the most current areas of psychological research in their teaching • Strong industry links provide students with opportunities for hands-on experience in the field. The Internship Initiative, organised by the Department of State Development, is one such opportunity, enabling QUT students to participate in the Australian Technology Showcase program. • Students can choose from many electives, including ‘Forensic Psychology and the Law’, taught in collaboration with the School of Justice Studies. • School of Psychology and Counselling has strong research links with prominent international agencies, with ongoing collaboration with institutions in the United States, Singapore and Canada. Examples include collaborative work in substance abuse with the University of California, Los Angeles and collaborative research in psycholinguistics with the University of Arizona. • QUT’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q) conducts groundbreaking research in road safety, working in collaboration with such agencies as the Queensland Police Service and the New South Wales State Transit Authority. Creative Industries courses, span eleven performing, media and visual arts disciplines, preparing students for an exciting career in the new economy • QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct is Australia's first site dedicated to innovative experimentation and commercial development in the creative industries. The AUD60 million dollar development features state-of-the-art newsrooms, interactive exhibition spaces, production workshops, design studios, computing studios and a resident theatre company. • QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct is the official base for ACID (Australasian CRC for Interaction Design Pty Ltd) ensuring that for the first time in Australia, QUT communication design students are able to participate in developing creative applications for new technologies. This includes games, interactive software engines, unexpected devices, innovative designs, 3D worlds, audio gizmos, interfaces, films, museum installations, digital interpretations, business products, videos, music, dances and architectural displays. • The largest AVID laboratory in Australia specialising in digital media production. • The Creative Industries Precinct is situated next to Kelvin Grove Urban Village, a $600million QUT and Queensland Government joint development providing state of the art technology, business and over 800 residential accommodation units. • Proud host to international students, scholars and researchers from more than 40 countries around the world, making invaluable contributions to the diversity, innovation, global networks and opportunities available. • Research is at the core of the Faculty's focus on creative community and industry-focused solutions and applications. • Strong industry and community links of teaching staff provide students with access to industry contacts and knowledge to enhance their overall learning experiences in the School of Humanities and Human Services disciplines. • The School of Humanities and Human Services, in partnership with the Anthropology Department at the UNSW, offers the only program in Australia that integrates an annual Pacific Island fieldwork tour in its Asia-Pacific studies to provide students with home-stay experiences in a Pacific Island community. • Offers Australia's only full suite of units in Pacific Island Studies, including, The Pacific since 1945, Pacific Culture Contact, Colonialism and Independence in Asia Pacific, and The USA and the Asia Pacific Region. • The Faculty coordinated an innovative, Japanese funded, regional professional development, institutional strengthening and publication program for Pacific Island history and social studies teachers from 1995 to 2001. • The Geography and Environmental Studies major in the School of Humanities and Human Services offers distinctive options in Regional Geography (World Regions, Southeast Asia and Japan) and Environmental Hazards and Disaster Management; which makes it the only undergraduate program of its kind in Southeast Queensland. • The Centre for Social Change Research in the School of Humanities and Human Services offers the innovative Doctor of Social Science, one of the very few social sciences professional doctorates in Australia. • Languages section uses cutting edge, interactive learning technologies such as the Access Grid Videoconferencing system and QUT’s Online Teaching technology to enhance students' learning experiences in a foreign language. • The Languages section is the first in Australia to use Access Grid Videoconferencing to enable real-time, real-life, cross-cultural communication between QUT students and students at international partner universities. • The Corrective Services major in the School of Humanities and Human Services provides students with the opportunity to visit and gain insights into the operations of the largest and most technically advanced high-security correctional centre in Australia. • Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, was a graduate of the School’s Master of Arts (Humanities) course. • QUT established Australia's first dedicated Faculty of Information Technology • Strong research links with top IT global companies such as SAP and Oracle including the closest and strongest relationship with Microsoft of any university in the Asia Pacific region. Since 1999, QUT has won around 20 Microsoft research grants worth close to AUD1 million. • The internationally-renowned Information Security Institute is the largest research centre of its kind in Australia and is the Information Infrastructure Security Hub of the Research Network for a Secure Australia (RNSA). Hill and Knowlton have 72 offices in 38 countries around the globe, and specialise in crisis management, corporate reputation management and political lobbying. Paul worked with WorldCom in their emergence from bankruptcy, and on the successful Athens Olympic bid. The firm has forged a strong reputation for corporate social responsibility under Taaffe’s leadership. Brisbane Graduate School of Business (BGSB) o Tier 1 Australian MBA program Australian Financial Review BOSS magazine, 2005 • QUT is home to 'Australia's Innovative MBA'. The innovative structure and curriculum of BGSB’s programs is unique in Australia and allows students greater choice and flexibility when designing their course. The MBA offers seven-week teaching periods, with six entry points each year. The course has 17 core units for a wider coverage and 17 specialisation areas, giving more depth than a standard MBA. • BGSB has special expertise and experience in Entrepreneurship education and offers a variety of choices for the entrepreneur, intrapreneur or venture capitalist. The school is the host of the Australian MOOT CORP® Business Plan competition and has regular visits from some of the world’s leading Entrepreneurship academics. Michael Lavarch, former Attorney General of Australia. • As an international student who considers an undergraduate QUT Law degree students must confirm recognition of an Australian law degree for admission purposes in their own country. An undergraduate law degree is currently recognised for solicitors’ admission in East Malaysia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
